BANGOR, Maine — Two out-of-state men arrested Tuesday in Old Town on charges that they were trying to sell more than 1,900 bags of heroin with an estimated street value of $28,500 made their first court appearances Wednesday at the Penobscot Judicial Center.

Jeremy Cruzado, 19, of Bronx, New York, and James McCausland, 27, of Fayston, Vermont, were charged with one count each of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, a Class A crime, and illegal importation of scheduled drugs, a Class C crime, according to court documents.

The men remained Wednesday night at the Penobscot County Jail unable to post $75,000 cash bail.

They were not asked to enter pleas because Cruzado and McCausland have not been indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury.

The duo came to the attention of Old Town police shortly after midnight Tuesday when an officer stopped a car with New York plates on Stillwater Avenue near Governor’s Restaurant for driving 40 miles per hour in a 25 mile-per-hour zone, according to court documents.

The men allegedly told police they were going to visit friends at an apartment on Water Street in Old Town.

Police found 1,907 individual packages of heroin in a duffle bag in the car, a news release issued Wednesday by Old Town police said.

Cruzado and McCausland are next due in court on Sept. 24.

If convicted, each man faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000 on the trafficking charge alone.
