ROCKLAND, Maine — The City Council confirmed this week the appointment of a veteran city administrator to take over the newly created position of public services director.
The council voted 4-1 Monday evening to appoint David St. Laurent, who served as director of the city’s solid waste department for eight years until he was picked in January as the assistant wastewater treatment plant director.
The new public services position will oversee what was formerly public works (snow plowing, road maintenance), as well as the previously separate solid waste facilities, and some parts of the wastewater infrastructure, such as pumping stations.
The public works director during the last 17 years, Greg Blackwell resigned in April after he was informed that his position was being eliminated and that he would need to reapply for the newly created public services director post.
St. Laurent will be paid $75,000. City Manager James Chaousis said that St. Laurent will transition into the position over the next few months. He will take over the job when his replacement at the wastewater plant is hired.
Councilor Larry Pritchett voted against the appointment, but he gave no reason for his no vote.
