NEWFIELD, Maine — A local man is facing multiple charges after allegedly threatening sheriff’s deputies Wednesday evening.

The series of events involving Kevin Fortin, 29, began when York County deputies were dispatched to a Demeritt Road residence when Fortin apparently was trying to harm himself with a pellet gun, according to Sheriff William King.

Fortin, who reportedly locked himself in a bathroom, fled the residence before deputies arrived, allegedly threatening to harm anyone who came to assist him and stating he had weapons he would use against police, according to King.

While Deputy Heath Mains was traveling to the residence, Fortin was heading west toward New Hampshire and swerved toward the deputy, forcing Mains onto the shoulder before continuing across the border, where New Hampshire officials located the vehicle, King said.

Fortin refused to stop and led police on a chase that eventually turned back into Maine and toward his residence, and a spike mat punctured his tires, King said.

Arresting officers had to deploy a Taser on Fortin as he was uncooperative. He eventually was taken to the York County Jail and charged with eluding a police officer and aggravated reckless conduct.
