FALMOUTH, Maine — Firefighters in Falmouth doused a blaze Saturday night that may have been sparked by a lightning strike.

Falmouth fire and EMS Chief Howard Rice Jr. said Sunday the fire on Rockaway Road was reported shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, just after a severe thunderstorm rolled through the area. Neighbors smelled the smoke and reported the fire.

Falmouth crews arrived to find the second story of the home “well involved with fire,” according to Rice.

Fire crews from Windham and Westbrook assisted on scene, with tankers from North Yarmouth, Freeport and other towns bringing water to fight the fire on the rural road. Firefighters from Portland and North Yarmouth covered Falmouth stations while crews were busy.

The house was severely damaged but there were no injuries, Rice said.

The state fire marshal’s office is working to officially determine what caused the fire.
