SACO, Maine — Police say a 59-year-old local woman died after a knife attack inside Shaw’s supermarket Wednesday afternoon.
Police released few details about the incident, but reportedly had a 31-year-old woman in custody.
The grocery store was closed as police investigated the crime scene.
Witnesses say the incident happened near the frozen food section and that they saw an elderly woman on the floor with blood all around her.
Police said the victim had been taken to Southern Maine Medical Center in serious condition.
“We have crime scene inside the store right now and it is roped off. State police have been notified. We notify them whenever there is a chance a serious assault can turn into a homicide,” Saco Police Chief Bradley Paul said.
Police expected to be on scene through Wednesday evening.
