Jets bring in QB Flynn

The New York Jets signed veteran quarterback Matt Flynn to a one-year contract on Wednesday to back up starter Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The Jets were in need of a reserve quarterback with Geno Smith sidelined for six to 10 weeks with a broken jaw.

Flynn joined his seventh NFL team after previous stops in Green Bay, Seattle, Oakland, Buffalo and New England.

The Patriots cut Flynn last week. He has a hamstring injury that will continue to restrict his practice time for about a week and keep him out of Friday night’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Agent: Seahawks’ Chancellor wants better contract

Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor is holding firm to his desire to have his contract upgraded, his agent said Wednesday.

Agent Alvin Keels told ESPN’s Josina Anderson: “Nothing has changed. He will not report without his contract being addressed this season. The team and I have been in contact, but we haven’t been able to agree on any compromise.”

Chancellor is entering the second year of a four-year, $28 million contract and has not reported to training camp as he seeks an upgrade over the $4.55 million he is set to be paid in 2015.

Two weeks ago, Seahawks general manager John Schneider called it “a bummer” that Chancellor is holding out, but he said “we have to continue to conduct business the way we always have.”

Panthers lose Benjamin for season

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin crumbled to the ground with a torn ACL in his left knee early in Wednesday’s joint practice with the Miami Dolphins that will sideline him for the 2015 season.

The Panthers confirmed the season-ending injury in a news release.

Benjamin was crossing the field when he stopped to plant while running a route and went to the turf in a heap with both hands wrapped around the top of his left knee. There was no contact on the play.

A first-round pick in 2014, Benjamin was second on the team with 73 receptions behind only tight end Greg Olsen and had a team-high nine touchdowns.

Benjamin was targeted 144 times last season, more than any rookie.

Report: Iupati out 6-8 weeks

Guard Mike Iupati, the Arizona Cardinals’ big free-agent addition, is expected to miss six to eight weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Iupati is expected to have an arthroscopic procedure this week, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.

The Cardinals signed Iupati from the NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers in March, giving him a five-year, $40 million contract.

They planned to pair him with last year’s big addition, left tackle Jared Veldheer, to try to improve a line that was responsible for the NFL’s 31st-ranked rushing attack.

The Cardinals instead are getting light up front, with Iupati possibly missing the first month and right tackle Bobby Massie reportedly suspended for the first three games.

A’s put Davis on DL

The Oakland A’s placed first baseman Ike Davis on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday due to a strained left hip.

The team recalled outfielder Jake Smolinski from Triple-A Nashville to replace Davis.

Davis said he is at 60 percent of his usual speed and has had problems finishing his swing. He is hitting .133 in his past 17 games.

Smolinski hit .320 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 11 games during his first stint with Oakland, from July 7 to Aug. 2.

Chargers claim TE Stokes

The San Diego Chargers claimed tight end Logan Stokes off waivers from the New England Patriots on Wednesday.

The Patriots had waived Stokes on Tuesday after acquiring tight end Asante Cleveland from the San Francisco 49ers.

Stokes, 22, had signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of LSU, where he played in one game over two seasons.

Pirates reclaim Snider

Outfielder/first baseman Travis Snider is returning to the Pittsburgh Pirates after his release by the Baltimore Orioles last week.

According to multiple reports, Snider will sign a minor league contract with the Pirates and report to Triple-A Indianapolis.

In 69 games with the Orioles this year, Snider batted .237 with three home runs and 20 RBIs.

The 27-year-old was previously with the Pirates, hitting .243 with 22 home runs and 80 RBIs from 2012 to 2014. Last year, Snider batted .264 with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs in 140 games.
