ROCKLAND, Maine — A Warren man, who was scared off during a burglary by a neighbor who fired off a gun, was sentenced Friday to 35 months in prison.

The sentence was imposed on Matthew D. Meyer, 22, of Warren for violating his probation on prior felony theft convictions. The violation was for his conviction for two counts of burglary and one count of theft on May 29 in Warren. He was sentenced to a concurrent two-year sentence for the new offenses.

According to an affidavit filed by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Meyer had broken into a home and a camper of a Warren resident. A neighbor spotted Meyer breaking into a shed and telephoned the owner.

When the neighbor heard more smashing sounds, he got his gun and fired off a few shots at what was called a safe direction, as to not hit Meyer but to scare him off, according to the affidavit.

Meyer was attempting to steal a riding mower, which was located near the home.
