SACO, Maine — Hundreds gathered at the Cornerstone United Methodist Church Sunday evening embracing one another and hoping for healing. Mary Lee Taylor, who knew Wendy Boudreau, said, “I needed to be around people that knew her and get some peace.”
It’s been a tough week for the Saco community. Boudreau was stabbed to death Wednesday while shopping at Shaw’s. Police say the attack was random; it could’ve been anyone. That’s what scares Taylor the most, “It was heartbreaking, I was shocked. I was actually on my way over to Shaw’s when it happened and I changed my mind.”
Those who knew Boudreau said she was well known and well loved. Taylor said, “I was friends with her daughter first, I used to play women’s football with her daughter and Jeff and Wendy have been my landlords for three or four years and they’re just wonderful people.”
The message tonight, “love always overcomes fear, light always overcomes the dark,” said Pastor Mimi Magee. Those at the vigil, like Taylor, say they’re trying hard to believe that.
“I’m a person of faith and I’m struggling with this but yes I think that people will eventually start to heal as long as they’re around positive people and let the light into their lives,” Taylor said.
Connor MacCalister, 31, is charged with Boudreau’s murder. According to court paper work MacCalister told police he targeted Boudreau because she wouldn’t be able to defend herself. He says he was “angry at life.”
