BANGOR, Maine — A local man accused of a daytime robbery at knifepoint remained Friday at the Penobscot County Jail after he did not object to the $50,000 cash bail requested by the district attorney’s office.
Jamie Brown, 35, of Bangor made his first court appearance Friday by video conference at the Penobscot Judicial Center. He is charged with robbery, trafficking in prison contraband and unlawful possession of a scheduled drug.
The trafficking and possession charges stem from a search of Brown at Penobscot County Jail after he was arrested, Tracy Collins, assistant district attorney, told the judge. Suboxone, a substitute for opiates, was found hidden in his groin area, she said.
Brown was not asked to enter pleas Friday because he has not yet been indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury.
His next court date is Oct. 13.
District Court Judge John Lucy set bail at $50,000.
Brown allegedly approached a man about 12:25 p.m. Wednesday near the corner of Somerset and Center streets in Bangor, according to police. He demanded the victim give up his cash, sneakers and necklace, but the man refused to give up the necklace.
“The victim refused to give up the necklace due to sentimental value and the suspect escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and the sneakers,” Sgt. Tim Cotton of the Bangor police said Thursday. “The suspect left behind the boots he had been wearing.”
Brown has a criminal history and was one of five people arrested in an October 2014 drug bust in Hancock County, according to a previously published report.
The weapon and victim’s sneakers were recovered, according to Cotton.
If convicted on the most serious charge of robbery, Brown faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000. He also could be ordered to pay restitution.
