ESPN pulls Schilling off air for rest of season

ESPN will keep baseball analyst Curt Schilling off the air for the remainder of the season after he made a controversial remark on Twitter last month.

ESPN removed Schilling, a former major league pitcher, from its broadcasts at the Little League World Series last month and on Thursday extended his banishment from all broadcasts.

“At all times during the course of their engagement with us, our commentators are directly linked to ESPN and are the face of our brand,” the network said in a statement. “We are a sports media company. Curt’s actions have not been consistent with his contractual obligations nor have they been professionally handled; they have obviously not reflected well on the company. As a result, he will not appear on ESPN through the remainder of the regular season and our Wild Card playoff game.”

In a tweet last month, Schilling compared Muslim extremists with Nazis in Germany.

Flood plans to coach after five Rutgers players arrested, suspended

With five players already suspended for the first half of the season opener Saturday and controversy swirling around coach Kyle Flood, Rutgers indefinitely suspended several more — including two starters — on Thursday.

Starting cornerback Dre Boggs, starting free safety Delon Stephenson, defensive backs Ruhann Peele and Nadir Barnwell and fullback Razohnn Gross were arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated assault, riot and conspiracy to commit a riot for allegedly attacking a group of four people in April. A 19-year-old Rutgers student suffered a broken jaw in the assault.

“We continue to monitor the situation,” Rutgers athletic director Julie Hermann said while confirming the player suspensions. “We will have no further comment as this is a pending legal matter.”

Meanwhile, Flood plans to be on the sideline for the opener against Norfolk State despite being at the center of an academic investigation and after the arrest and suspensions of the players. University officials are investigating whether Flood violated NCAA rules by contacting a faculty member about Barnwell’s academic standing.

Broncos safety suspended for opener

Denver Broncos Pro Bowl safety T.J. Ward will sit out the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13.

The NFL announced Thursday that Ward received a one-game suspension for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy.

The suspension stems from a May 2014 incident at a strip club that occurred shortly after Ward signed a four-year, $22.5 million contract with the Broncos last year. Ward faced misdemeanor charges that were later dropped.
