PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — The University of Maine women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Thursday night when Providence College’s Casey Estey scored with 14 seconds left in the game to lift the Friars to a 2-1 victory over the Black Bears.
Catherine Zimmerman assisted on the winning goal for Providence (4-1) after Ashley Robinson had tied it for Maine (3-1) with an unassisted goal with about seven minutes left in the game.
Rachel Ugolik scored a first-half goal from an Estey assist for the Friars.
Maine outshot Providence 13-10 with Providence goalie Kristyn Shea making three saves and Maine’s Claudia Dube-Trempe finishing with four.
UMFK soccer teams win
At Fort Kent, the University of Maine-Fort Kent men’s and women’s soccer teams rolled to victories over Crandall University of Moncton, New Brunswick.
The UMFK women won the first game 6-0 and the men’s team took the second 7-0.
Sophomores Kendra Freund and Catherine Bruno sparked the UMFK women’s team with three goals each as the Bengals outshot the Chargers 43-0.
Crandall’s Michaela LeMoine finished with 16 saves while UMFK improved to 2-0.
In the men’s game, the Bengals enjoyed a 40-1 shots advantage and were sparked by two goals each form Odean Irons and Willy Monthe. Ross Downie, Milton Christopher and Daniel Blackwood each chipped in with a goal. UMFK improved to 4-0.
