BANGOR, Maine — Events scattered across Maine will celebrate the U.S. labor movement and its contribution to today’s workforce this Labor Day.

On Monday, the Eastern Maine Labor Council is serving food and staging a performance from the Loose Cannon Jug Band at the Solidarity Center, 20 Ivers St. in Brewer.

Groups, including Fairpoint workers, machinists from Bath Iron Works and Eastern Maine Medical Center nurses, will share stories of their recent “labor victories and fights.” There is a $5 suggested donation, but kids 12 and under are welcome for free.

The Southern Maine Labor Council will host a labor day breakfast, 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Irish Heritage Center, 34 Gray St., Portland. After the breakfast, the group will march to Longfellow Square and hold a press conference to promote raising wages.

Tickets are $25, or a table of eight can be seated for $175.

In Lewiston, the Western Maine Labor Council will host a community barbecue, 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers headquarters at 238 Goddard Rd.

In Augusta, the Central Maine Labor Council hosted a barbecue complete with fair games and a pie eating contest Sunday. The event was a “celebration of working people’s contributions and call to raise wages in Maine,” according to a news release.
