ORLAND, Maine — A Penobscot woman died Wednesday night after she was struck by a vehicle as she was lying on the pavement on Route 1, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Jessica Crocker, 45, was lying in the northbound lane of the highway where it intersects Route 166 about 11 p.m., the sheriff’s department said in a prepared statement. Jason Bishop, 39, of Bucksport was driving a 2003 Chevrolet through the intersection, which struck and killed Crocker.

Crocker “was dressed all in dark clothing,” which resulted in Bishop not seeing her lying in the roadway before his vehicle struck her, the statement indicated.

Deputy Sheriff Jeff McFarland, investigating officer in the incident, said Thursday afternoon that Bishop did not suffer any injuries in the collision and brought his vehicle to a controlled stop on the pavement after it struck Crocker.

He said the incident remains under investigation and no decision has been made about possible charges.

Sheriff’s department personnel were assisted at the scene by members of the Orland Fire Department and Bucksport Ambulance Service and by Officer Chad Wilmot of the Ellsworth Police Department.
