BANGOR, Maine — Husson University’s Stephen Berenyi scored two goals and teammate Phil Frost provided the game-winner in the Eagles’ 3-2 men’s soccer victory over the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners Saturday night at Husson’s fourth annual Challenge Cup.
Bryan Soucy gave Maine Maritime (1-5) a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, but Berenyi answered with back-to-back goals in nearly the same spot, top shelf, less than two minutes apart. His second goal was assisted by Rod Ghanayem.
Jonathan Reeks tied it for MMA on a penalty kick at the 39th minute, but Frost converted a penalty kick a minute later for Husson.
Husson (3-2) outshot MMA 19-17 with Husson’s Steve Paquette making five saves and Marshall Spear finishing with six for MMA.
UMF splits weekend
At Farmington on Saturday, Pine Manor scored three second half-goals to take a 5-2 victory after the University of Maine-Farmington had tied it 2-2.
Jose Corrales and Brian Wade each scored in the first half for Pine Manor (2-1) before Yusuf answered for UMF.
Ibrahim Achekh tied it for UMF at 45:50 in the second half, but Pine Manor rallied with goals from Hakeem Duncan, Kenardo Dwyer, and Kelvin Chico.
Oscar Estrada made nine saves for Pine Manor and Matt Wilson had three for UMF
On Sunday, UMF edged Emerson 2-1 when Ryan Fairbanks knocked in the winning goal on a header from a Tristan Price corner kick.
Uriah Forest-Bulley also scored for UMF (2-1) off a rebound.
Duncan Bochicchino scored for Emeron (2-2).
Women’s Soccer
UMFK 4, Malone 1
At Canton, Ohio, on Saturday, Veronica De La Cruz scored three second-half goals to snap a 1-1 halftime tie and rally UMaine-Fort Kent to victory.
The three goals were scored in an 11-minute span — the first assisted by Yosselin Berrueco, the second off a rebound and the third from a Catherine Bruno assist.
Berrueco scored a first-half goal for UMFK before Malone’s Alex Carcano equalized.
Michelle Delgadillo made four saves for UMFK (8-1) while Leah Rauscher had five for Malone (1-2).
USM 5, Thomas 0
At Waterville on Saturday, Sarah Michaud, Katherine Hunziker, Hana McNally and Kara Sampsell each scored a first-half goal as the University of Southern Maine rolled to the win.
Ariana Davidson added a second-half goal for USM.
Bowdoin 6, Husson 1
At Brunswick on Sunday, six different players scored for Bowdoin as the Polar Bears opened their home schedule with a win.
Bowdoin scored four first-half goals with Jamie Hofstetter starting the surge when she buried a loose ball from the middle of the box, sending her shot to the left post, 13 minutes into the game.
Julia Patterson followed with a goal from a Kiersten Turner assist at 21:37 and Turner headed in a cross from Sophie al Mutawaly six minutes later. Elizabeth Weathers rounded out the first half’s scoring by finishing off a cross from the left end line.
Husson scored three minutes into the second half when Alison Boulier lofted a shot over Rachel Stout.
Bowdoin closed it out with goals from al Mutawaly and Julia Bottone.
Bowdoin outshot Husson 36-7 with Jordyn Hopkins (six) and Kayla Gordon (seven) in net for Husson (2-1-1).
Emerson 4, UMF 0
At Farmington on Sunday, Paige Haley recorded a goal and an assist to help Emerson beat UMaine-Farmington.
Tayllar Righini, Christine White and Cassandra Tatomir each added a goal for Emerson (5-0), which scored three second-half goals. Melanie Escobar made two saves.
Sam Hatch finished with 17 saves for UMFK (1-2).
Field hockey
Springfield 3, Husson 0
At Springfield, Massachusetts, on Saturday, Maggie Kennedy and Kristina Krull each scored a goal in the last six minutes of the first half to spark the Springfield victory.
Katie Gill added a second-half goal for Springfield (3-0) and Timarie Villa made four saves to notch the shutout.
Anne Marie Provencal finished with seven saves for Husson (1-4). Husson had a 12-10 edge on penalty corners.
Quinnipiac 3, Maine 1
At Hamden, Connecticut, Jess Fontaine scored two of Quinnipiac’s first-half goals in the win over the Black Bears.
Fontaine’s first goal, assisted by Nadya Gill, came just 1:25 into the first half and Jess Gargan added an unassisted goal four minutes later. Fontaine scored the third goal unassisted at the 27:11 mark before Maine’s Vivien Bell answered with an unassisted goal at 42:04.
Samantha Cobotic made four saves for Maine (4-3) while Natalia Grodzki had five for Quinnipiac (4-1).
Thomas 3, Simmons 2
At Waterville on Sunday, Tiffany Weeks scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lift the Terriers to victory.
The Terriers struck first five minutes into the first half. Taylor Bergeron slid a pass toward the left post to Crystal Cunningham, who lifted a shot over the diving Simmons goaltender. Thomas added its second goal with 10 minutes left in the game when Erica Blake passed to Weeks, who fired a shot from just inside the circle and past the goalie for her first collegiate goal.
Simmons’ Julie Saltamartini scored two goals in the second half but Weeks put Thomas ahead when she scored off a penalty stroke with six minutes left.
Abbie Charrier finished with nine saves for while Brianna Rastello had four for Simmons.
