Phillies’ Hernandez out for rest of season
The Philadelphia Phillies placed second baseman Cesar Hernandez on the 60-day disabled list on Monday, one day after he dislocated his left thumb in a game against the Chicago Cubs.
The season-ending injury occurred when Hernandez collided with Chicago’s Anthony Rizzo. Hernandez is slated to meet with a hand specialist to determine the severity of the injury.
Hernandez batted .272 with 19 stolen bases in 127 games.
Redskins CB Culliver suspended one game
The NFL suspended Washington Redskins cornerback Chris Culliver one game on Monday for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
Culliver’s suspension without pay begins immediately. He will be eligible to return to the Redskins’ active roster on Monday, Sept. 21 following the team’s Week 2 game against the St. Louis Rams.
Culliver, while with the San Francisco 49ers, was arrested in Santa Clara, Calif., in March 2014, and charged with hit and run for leaving the scene after hitting a bicyclist with his car. A witness chased Culliver down, which led Culliver to threaten him with brass knuckles.
After the felony count of possession of brass knuckles was reduced, Culliver pleaded guilty on June 30 to misdemeanor possession of brass knuckles and misdemeanor hit-and-run.
Texans’ O’Brien won’t name starting QB
Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien refused to name his starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, and said on Monday he will not make any announcement about the starter this week.
Brian Hoyer, the starter in the opener, was replaced by Ryan Mallett during Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
O’Brien said he already knows who the starting quarterback will be but wants to keep it a secret as long as possible.
“Every decision we make will be in the best interest of the team, no matter which position,” O’Brien said. “Whatever decision that is made, whoever starts the game against Carolina, it’ll be in the best interest of the team.”
Hoyer said he feels like he “let this whole entire organization down” after the 27-20 loss to the Chiefs.
