TURNER, Maine — Police are searching for the driver of a dark-colored Ford pickup truck in the aftermath of a fatal hit-and-run Saturday night on Route 117 in Turner.
Brittany Stanhope, 21, of South Paris was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chief Deputy William Gagne of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. She and a friend had parked in the breakdown lane on the north side of the road, which also is called Buckfield Road, at about 8:50 p.m. after experiencing mechanical troubles with her vehicle.
“Brittany had stepped out of her vehicle to get something from the backseat when she was struck by a truck,” Gagne said in the media release issued early Sunday morning. “The truck was heading west on the Buckfield Road towards Buckfield, and the truck did not stop.”
The truck should show damage on the front passenger side, police said. Witnesses and evidence gathered indicated the truck’s make and dark color.
Turner Fire & Rescue went to the accident, along with sheriff’s office personnel, and assisted with traffic control.
Police said that a portion of Buckfield Road was closed while the crash was being investigated, and Maine State Police officials are assisting the sheriff’s office in reconstructing the crash scene.
