BANGOR, Maine — A Houlton man pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of threatening a foreign official and was sentenced to time served, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Dushko Venelinov Vulchev, 38, who is originally from Bulgaria, has been behind bars since his March 29 arrest.
Vulchev, a naturalized U.S. citizen, sent an email from his home to Bulgarian officials making threats to harm the Bulgarian vice president of the European Commission.
The FBI had traced the emails to Vulchev, who had used a Houlton neighbor’s Internet connection.
Along with the FBI, the Houlton Police Department was the primary investigator in the case, while the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs and Bulgaria’s government provided assistance.
