BANGOR, Maine — A local man is facing multiple charges after allegedly creating a police standoff at a Spring Street apartment early Monday.

The original complaint that led to the arrest of Gerard Godin, 58, was of loud noises and arguing, Bangor police Sgt. Tim Cotton said in an email.

When police arrived at the apartment around 2:30 a.m., nobody answered the door. When officers reached Godin by phone, he mentioned having a gun and said he would come to the door, Cotton said.

“Obviously, with that information caution was called for,” the sergeant said. “However, we only wanted to follow up on the noise complaint.”

Godin came out a short time later and no guns were found on him or in the apartment. Cotton said Godin came out before a crisis negotiation team arrived.

Another person in the apartment was checked out and found to be OK, Cotton said.

Godin was charged with terrorizing and creating a police standoff and taken to the Penobscot County Jail. The district attorney’s office is reviewing the case.

According to BDN archives, Godin has a history of run-ins with Bangor law enforcement, including drinking in a city park in October 2012 and a Christmas Eve 2010 domestic violence assault arrest.

Godin’s record dates to 1992, according to the archives.
