BANGOR — Bangor Parks and Recreation will hold tryouts for the upcoming Travel Basketball Program for all girls and boys in grades 5-6 and 7-8 on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Bangor High School Gymnasium. Tryouts for grades 5-6 are 8:30 a.m. with check-in 8-8:30 a.m.; and grades 7-8 at 9:30 a.m. with check-in 9-9:30 a.m. Players must pre-register and attend tryouts to be considered for teams. Anyone who cannot attend, must notify Parks and Rec prior to Oct. 16. The fee is $75 when registering. If a child does not make the team, an account credit or refund will be issued. WATERVILLE — The Maine Majestix indoor field hockey tryouts will be held beginning Oct. 12 at the Alfond Youth Center. Any players who have previously participated in the indoor program with Majestix don’t have to attend a tryout but they are encouraged to attend at least one. The schedule is Oct. 12: Under 16s (6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.), U-19s (8-9:30); Oct. 14: U-19s (6:30-8), U-16s (8-9:30); Oct. 19: U-16s (6:30-8), U-19s (8-9:30); Oct. 21: U-19s (6:30-8), U-16s (8-9:30); Oct. 26: U-12s (6:30-8), U-14s (8-9:30); Oct. 28: U-12s (6:30-8), U-14s (8-9:30). OLD TOWN — Old Town Recreation Center’s first Turkey Bowl, a double elimination adult flag football tournament, on Nov. 1. The tournament will feature six on six play, with a maximum of eight players per team. The entry fee is $60 per team. ICE HOCKEY

BREWER — Brewer Youth hockey is accepting registrations for its Learn to Skate/Learn to Play Hockey sessions. There will be two, 12-week sessions this season. Participants can sign up for one session or both. Sessions will be held at 12:40 p.m. Sundays, beginning Oct. 25, at the Penobscot Ice Arena, 90 Acme Road. The cost will be $75 per session. SIDNEY — Maine Pond Hockey Classic, Feb. 12-14, 2016, at Snow Pond Center for the Arts on Snow Pond (Messalonskee Lake). The site will contain six or more rinks, beer garden, fire pits and food vendors. It will offer seven divisions for players of different ages and ability levels. Each division winner will receive a prize pack. The Maine Pond Hockey Classic is an annual fundraising tournament supporting the Boys and Girls Clubs and YMCA of Greater Waterville. Registration ia underway. Interested teams must register prior to Jan. 12, 2016. Each team plays three pool play games for seeding followed by a single elimination tournament. ROAD RACING

OLD TOWN — Penobscot/Piscataquis/Hancock Area Special Olympics will hold a benefit 5K road race, 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, starting at Orono/Old Town YMCA in Old Town. The race is on a flat, fast course utilizing roads and bike paths. New and experienced runners and walkers are welcome. There will be awards for top finishers, first and second place age group winners, top three Special Olympic athletes, as well as the oldest and youngest participants. Advance entry fee is $20 until Oct. 7, after which it will be $25. BRUNSWICK — The 10th annual Phil Soule 5K “Phlail” has been scheduled for Homecoming Sunday, Oct. 18, at Farley Field House on the campus of Bowdoin College. The free 1/2K Kid’s Fun Run begins at 9:30 a.m., the 5K race had a $20 entry fee, and will begin at 10 a.m., with online registration available at http://www.GetMeRegistered.com/PhilSoulePhlail. Race-day registration 8:30-9:45 a.m. For information, contact Nathan Alsobrook at nalsobro@bowdoin.edu . Phil Soule coached football at Bowdoin College for 39 years. He also coached baseball, wrestling, lacrosse, squash, and track. One of the founders of the Maine Rowdies running club, Phil was a competitive runner. Marathons, ultra-marathons, and triathlons were his favorite events. Phil’s philosophy was to live each day to its fullest. The intent of the 5K “Phlail” is to honor that belief.

ROLLER DERBY
