PORTLAND, Maine — A high school football player who suffered a shattered spleen on the field is making a fast recovery and is expected to be released from the hospital Friday.
Adam Smith spoke with FOX23 News Thursday from Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. Smith is a Leavitt High School senior and starting lineman for the football team. On Saturday, he was hit in the abdomen on a kick return play, rupturing his spleen.
Smith is now up and walking around and will be released just in time for senior night.
“Really, I didn’t think I was going to be able to get out for a while, but it’s amazing the progress I’ve been making,” Smith said. “They did a really great job taking care of me, and I really think that’s a big part of it.”
During senior night, the school will recognize all the seniors on the football team and call their names. A car will drive Smith onto the field, and he’ll be able to walk from there when they call his name.
