BANGOR, Maine — An estimated 200 people, including several police officers, took part Thursday in the fourth annual Bangor Walks to End Abuse event in the city’s downtown area.
Spruce Run-Womancare Alliance hosted the walk as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. People walked in support of survivors, to remember those who have died and to make a statement that the community will not tolerate domestic abuse, according to organizers.
Participants had the opportunity to receive T-shirts, purple ribbon temporary tattoos and purple ribbon stickers. Many walked carrying purple balloons. Purple is the color that represents the courage of domestic abuse survivors and the dedication of those working to eradicate it.
Domestic violence assaults constituted 47 percent of all assaults reported to police in Maine in 2013, according to the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence. There were 21 homicides in Maine in 2014, and 14 were the result of domestic violence, including six children.
Spruce Run-Womancare Alliance is an organization that primarily serves Penobscot and Piscataquis counties, providing safety planning, support and advocacy for those affected by domestic abuse, according to its website.
