YORK, Maine — A Hermon woman headed to the Bangor area, allegedly with a large quantity of heroin, had her journey detoured on Tuesday just north of the York toll plaza on the Maine Turnpike.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Thursday that Kimberly Cote, 36, was headed north from New York to distribute the drugs in the Bangor area.

McCausland said Cote’s arrest occurred Tuesday night as Maine Drug Enforcement Agency officers and state troopers pulled the vehicle she was in over after garnering information that drugs were likely headed for Bangor.

A drug dog was alerted to the presence of contraband, and while none was found in the car, Cote had hidden about 42 grams of heroin in a body cavity, McCausland said.

The drugs have a street value of $8,000, he added.

Cote, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was arrested and charged with aggravated heroin trafficking. She was taken to the York County Jail.

The driver, a man from Brooklyn, New York, and another passenger, a Hampden woman, were released without being charged after no drugs were found on their possession.

Cote remained in jail without bail Thursday.
