MACHIAS, Maine — The town of Machias was overrun Friday by young people hoping for treats.
More than 700 trick-or-treaters and their parents walked through downtown Friday afternoon, stopping at the 61 businesses and organizations that offered candy or an alternative snack for those who couldn’t have sugar.
“I love it; I look forward to this,” said Sharon Mack, executive director of the Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsored the event. “This is my Halloween. … I get to see them in their costumes. They’re so cute and excited.”
Because Machias is situated in a rural area, many children don’t live in neighborhoods where they can go trick-or-treating. The event in town gives them that chance, she said.
Mack said she had one parent complain the event was not held after 5 p.m., when working parents could participate with their children.
“After 5 p.m., all the businesses are closed and it’s dark,” Mack said.
The chamber has been running the trick-or-treat event, which gives businesses the chance to show community spirit and offer a gesture to families that support them the rest of the year, she said.
In addition to giving out candy, Center Street Congregational Church gave out coffee and allowed tired parents an opportunity to sit.
Members of the Washington Academy Dance Class also performed some routines in the Machias Bank parking lot, including one to the Michael Jackson song “Thriller.”
Robin Pierce of East Machias, who was there with her children, Owen, 3, Jadalyn, 8, and Brooklyn, 12, said she liked the fact that the event took place during the day, when it is safe. She and her children have been coming for several years, she said
“It’s great for the kids,” she said.
