Maine bowlers qualify for national tourney
EAST WILTON — Corey Ridley of Jay, Darren Forkey Jr. of Waterville and Avery Goulding of Auburn qualified for the Junior Gold Championships in Indianapolis during the Maine State Junior Gold Bowlers second 10-pin tourney of the season Saturday at Meadow Lanes.
Ridley rolled a 963 five-game total and Forkey recorded a 919 to earn Under-20 berths in the national tourney while Goulding totaled an 882 for a U15 spot.
Forkey also won the Maine tourney in U20 while Christopher Haney of Brewer captured the U15 title.
The tourney high games were: Ridley 215, 247, 230; Forkey 236, 224, 212, 236; Jennifer Lemay 228; Haney 205, 220; Brandon Plummer 220; Preston Kincaid 217; Nate Boothby 214; Jacob Dubuc 214; Alley Gagne-Robertson 213; Tyler Lerman 213; Goulding 203; and Austin Hicks 202.
Mattingly named Marlins’ manager
Don Mattingly was introduced Monday as the 14th manager in Miami Marlins franchise history — including eight skippers, counting interims, since 2010.
Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said he is confident Mattingly will be the team’s “long-term solution.”
The 54-year-old Mattingly and the Los Angeles Dodgers parted ways after the playoff loss to the New York Mets. The Dodgers won the National League West for the third time in his five seasons with the team.
Mattingly signed four-year deal after agreeing last week to become the Marlins’ new manager.
“I plan on being here at least 10,” Mattingly said at a news conference.
Broncos acquire TE Davis from 49ers
The Denver Broncos acquired veteran tight end Vernon Davis from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2017. The teams will also swap late-round picks in the 2016.
Davis, 31, reportedly had a verbal confrontation with San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick in a team meeting earlier this season, and he has just 18 catches for 194 yards and no touchdowns.
The 10-year-veteran has 441 career receptions for 5,640 yards and 55 touchdowns — all franchise records for a tight end. He twice had 13 touchdowns in a season, most recently in 2013. He has twice been named to the Pro Bowl.
Davis had spent his entire career with the 49ers, who selected him with the sixth overall pick in the 2006 draft.
Baylor QB has neck surgery
Baylor coach Art Briles said that quarterback Seth Russell is expected to make a full recovery after having season-ending neck surgery on Friday.
Russell is out of the hospital after undergoing a procedure to repair damage to his cervical vertebra. Russell was injured on Oct. 24, when he broke a bone in his neck during a 45-27 win over Iowa State.
It’s unclear if or when Russell, a junior who leads the nation in passing efficiency, will be able to resume his football career.
Freshman Jarrett Stidham will take over as Baylor’s starting quarterback.
