BANGOR, Maine — Demolition began Monday morning on the former Captain Nick’s building on Union Street.
Until it closed in June, Captain Nick’s was a popular seafood restaurant that had been operating at 1165 Union St. since it opened in 1985. Before that, the building was home to Chuck Wagon Restaurant.
George Brountas, the original owner of Captain Nick’s, leased the building to Caribou native and restaurateur Joe Hackett two years before the business closed for good.
The property since has been acquired by R.H. Foster, which owns the Airport on the Run filling station and convenience store next door at 1165 Union St.
It wasn’t immediately clear what R.H. Foster plans to do with the property — or the railroad car that served as one of the eatery’s dining areas.
R.H. Foster Executive Vice President Robert Tracy could not be reached for comment Tuesday. However, Cary Weston, whose firm has done public relations work for the company, did reach Tracy and said there are no specific plans in place, other than to get the lot cleared and at least partially paved for parking before area asphalt plants shut down for the season.
“Time is of the essence,” he said, noting that a foot of snow was on the ground at this time last year.
