WOOLWICH, Maine — Sheriff’s deputies seized more than $20,000 in cash along with small amounts of cocaine and marijuana from two Massachusetts residents on Route 1 Saturday night.

Miguel Almonte, 25, of Methuen, Massachusetts, was stopped for alleged speeding at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, according to a release from Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry.

Almonte was arrested and charged with operating after license suspension. Following a search of the 2013 Honda Accord, he also was charged with possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

His passenger, 25-year-old Yasmin I. Navarro of Lawrence, Massachusetts, was charged with Class B felony possession of scheduled drugs, namely cocaine.

Almonte and Navarro were taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset and posted bail Monday afternoon. They are scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on Jan. 6, 2016.

“U.S. Route 1 is a known corridor for drug traffickers,” Merry said in the release. “It isn’t uncommon for drugs to be transported from Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut to points throughout Maine. This is a typical example of that behavior. Aggressive interdiction by law enforcement, such as this case, is just one way we are combating the flow of illicit drugs into our state.”
