Sale of fetus parts an issue

Unfortunately, the sale of aborted fetus parts is not, as Rebecca Richardson writes in her Nov. 2 BDN letter to the editor, a made up issue. The website Snopes has published articles on the sale of fetus parts.

The Center for Medical Progress also has posted an hourlong video on YouTube called “Second Planned Parenthood Executive Haggles over Baby Parts’ Prices.”

Rebecca wrote of a TV commercial reporting the sale of fetus parts “that is outrageous, patently untrue and disgustingly offensive, not to mention an affront to every woman who watches it.” “Patently untrue” is the only inaccurate part of that sentence.

Be wary of online purchases

I don’t know what has happened to us as a people. It used to be that a man’s word was his bond. Deals were made with nothing more than a handshake. I consider myself an honest person. Sadly, today that makes me a patsy for the scum who have no moral scruples.

I have been searching for a number of antique motorcycle parts on eBay, Craigslist and other websites. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the parts I was looking for, so I posted a listing online of the parts I was looking for and hoped to get lucky.

Within a couple of days, someone from Mississippi emailed me a description of the parts he had with a photo to verify they were the right parts. We worked out a price tag of $1,000, including shipping. A fair price, considering I had looked high and low for those parts.

Now sending $1,000 to someone I do not know was a bit more than my good sense would allow. So I did a little bit more research and found that picture of the equipment I had been trying to purchase, except it was in Massachusetts, not Mississippi. I was almost the victim of a scam.

I wrote this to inform others to do their homework before making online purchases. Ask questions and ensure the seller is a person of integrity when making purchases. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

No right to concealed carry

Until we Americans finally decide to end gun violence in this country and elect presidents, governors and representatives who will stand up to the NRA and enforce or pass laws to limit and restrict the availability and use of guns, we will be condemned to watch more and more people suffer and become victims.

The NRA, gun makers and gun lobbies are not going to be content until every man, woman and child is carrying a weapon. Arm the teachers? Why not arm the students, too?

People claim that if the government restricts access to guns, only criminals will have weapons. If so, where do the criminals get the guns? From unregulated gun shows, private registered sales and unsecured guns laying about in private homes, to name a few sources.

Meanwhile, here in Maine, our Legislature passed and the governor signed into law the most obscene gun law in this state’s history. The unregistered, unaccountable right of everybody to carry a loaded and concealed handgun. No limitations on the size of the gun or the number of bullets it carries. To rationalize the very existence of this law, proponents invented a new catch phrase: “constitutional carry.” This slogan is pure self-delusion. The U.S. Constitution does not guarantee the right to carry a concealed weapon.
