ALBANY, New York — Skowhegan senior Nicole Sevey scored 2:45 into overtime to cap a late rally and give the University of Maine Black Bears a 2-1 victory over the University of California-Berkeley Golden Bears in their America East field hockey quarterfinal Friday.
The 18-3 Black Bears, the nation’s 19th-ranked team, will face No. 13 Stanford, 13-5, in Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. semifinal. Stanford beat Vermont 5-2 on Thursday.
Albany and Pacific will meet in the noon semifinal.
Sevey, the Maine captain and All-AE first team selection, capitalized on a Golden Bear turnover and beat goalie Kori Griswold for her fourth goal of the season.
Sevey had also assisted on Sydney Veljacic’s tying goal with just 2:48 left in regulation off a penalty corner. Libby Riedl also assisted on All-AE second teamer Veljacic’s team-leading 12th goal.
Veljacic had hit the post in the first half.
Janaye Sakkas staked California to a 1-0 lead early in the second half off a perfect pass from Alie Zimmer. It was her seventh goal.
It was California’s only shot of the game as Maine outshot the Golden Bears 23-1.
Maine had an 18-0 edge in penalty corners.
Emma Cochran and Emily Corbett didn’t make a save for Maine while Griswold finished with 11.
Women’s Soccer
UMFK 6, Bryant/Stratton 0
At Asheville, North Carolina, Yosselin Berrueco scored three goals for a hat trick to power the UMaine-Fort Kent Bengals by Bryant/Stratton-Syracuse in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association semifinals.
UMFK will take on the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences for the national title at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Katherine Ferland chipped in with two goals and an assist for UMFK, now 21-2. Marie-Laurance Montagne added an unassisted goal and Michelle Delgadillo had one save as UMFK had an 18-1 advantage on shots.
Berrueco put UMFK on the scoreboard via a Kelsi Lanphear assist at the 20:51 mark and added an unassisted goal about three minutes later. Berrueco then set up Ferland’s first goal and the Bengals added three more goals in the second half.
Megan Hagadorn finished with two saves for Bryant/Stratton.
Alfred St. 3, UMM 0
At Asheville, N.C., three different players scored a goal to lift Alfred State by UMaine-Machias during the consolation round of the USCAA tourney.
Charlotte Rosvold, Emily Wolf and Allison Vargeson each scored a goal for Alfred State (9-8-1).
Aisling Farragher-Gemma finished with 10 saves for UMM (12-6-4).
Men’s Soccer
UMFK 9, Florida College 2
At Asheville, North Carolina, Ross Downie scored three of UMaine-Fort Kent’s four first-half goals and the Bengals scored five unanswered goals in the second half to roll by Florida College in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association semifinals.
Downie scored the game’s first two goals, but Micahel Mazza and Sorel St. Fluer each scored unassisted goals to tie.
Downie responded for UMFK via assists from Daniel Blackwood and Rodney Witter at 36:34 and then Witter added an unassisted goal four minutes later for a 4-2 halftime lead.
Willie Monthe, Odean Irons and Milton Christopher each scored a second-half goal for UMFK and Lewis Temple added two unassisted goals.
UMFK outshot Florida 31-8 with Austin McDaniel finishing with nine saves for Florida (13-8) and Butch Forbes making three for UMFK (21-2).
