BRUNSWICK, Maine — A local man is facing drug charges after heroin was found in his vehicle during a Saturday night traffic stop, officials said.

George Jones, 39, is facing charges of aggravated trafficking in heroin and trafficking in prison contraband, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.

Jones was pulled over by state police on outer Pleasant Street shortly after exiting Interstate 295, according to McCausland. Jones had been under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies in recent months on suspicion of selling heroin purchased out of state in the Bath-Brunswick area.

More than 500 bags of heroin valued at over $10,000 were found in the vehicle, McCausland said.

Hypodermic needles and empty wax paper bags were also found in the car. Jones was taken to Cumberland County Jail after his arrest.
