PORTLAND, Maine — A Skowhegan man was indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury on two charges in connection with a fatal crash on the Maine Turnpike in June.

Derek Knowles, 35, was indicted on charges of causing death while his license was suspended and operating after revocation, both felonies.

Knowles was heading north on the turnpike when he lost control of the SUV he was driving.

Knowles’ passenger, Anthony Vandyck, 40, of Fairfield, was ejected through the sunroof window. Vandyck was not wearing a seat belt in the crash and Knowles suffered minor injuries.

Knowles faces up to 10 years in prison on the causing death with a suspended license charge and five years on the operating after revocation charge.

In addition, a Portland man is facing a pair of charges in connection with an alleged assault of a minor under the age of 14.

Gustavo Rodriguez, 36, is accused of gross sexual assault, a Class A felony, and unlawful sexual contact, a Class C felony.

If convicted, Rodriguez could spend up to 30 years in prison on the Class A charge and up to five on the Class C count.
