PORTSMOUTH, New Hampshire — For four and a half years Marissa Jenness has sifted through donations at the Goodwill in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Last Friday she found one, a wallet that came with a story. “All of a sudden I open it and I was like ‘Oh,’ and I shut it real quick,” Jenness said.
Inside the wallet were six $100 bills.
“I don’t know. I was kind of shocked. I mean we’ve had money come through before, I mean 5, 20. We find people accidentally donate things, but kind of shocked, that’s a lot of money,” Jenness said.
Jenness brought the wallet and the cash straight to her manager.
“And from there we contacted our loss prevention. Loss prevention advised us to contact Portsmouth police,” A.J. Carter, store manager, said.
Police managed to find part of a name imprinted on the plastic. “So he was able to type the name in the system and find the lady,” Jenness said.
The lady, whose husband recently passed away, had donated some of his things not knowing she would get $600 in return.
“She didn’t even know, so I mean it was like a gift from him, you know,” Jenness said.
Jenness hopes this can inspire others to always have good will no matter what.
“She did a great thing and I easily she could have not said anything and no one would know,” Carter said.
“I feel nice. I’m glad that she was able to find it and she was emotional. She seemed excited about it so it was cool,” Jenness said.
CBS 13 did get in touch with the woman who donated the wallet. She said she’s still making her way after the death of her husband. She declined an interview, but she said she hopes Jenness gets the recognition she deserves.
