STARKS, Maine — The Somerset County Sheriff’s Department responded to a fatal crash on Anson Road in Starks late Friday night.

When deputies arrived, they found Clint Briggs, 21, of Madison dead at the scene.

Deputies say the driver of the car, Jonathon Cayford, was injured. He was brought to Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan.

The occupant of the front passenger seat, a 17-year-old, was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Deputies say they were able to determine that Cayford was passing a line of other vehicles at a high rate of speed, which was estimated at 80 mph.

As the vehicles approached a corner in the road, Cayford lost control of the 1998 Nissan Maxima, striking several trees. Briggs was not wearing a seatbelt. Speed and alcohol may be contributing factors in the crash, according to deputies.

The crash remains under investigation.
