CUSHING, Maine — A 50-year-old Warren man made his initial court appearance Wednesday after police say he broke into a Cushing home.

Police were led to suspect Joe R. Maye after his wallet was allegedly found outside the River Road home that had been burglarized on Monday.

The homeowner had been gone for a short time and found an entryway door kicked in and another open door inside, according to police.

The homeowner’s son then found a wallet in the yard that had a driver’s license and other identifications for Maye, according to an affidavit filed in court by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

Police met with Maye who denied any involvement in the burglary. He later allegedly said he had been in Cushing and may have been at the residence. Maye allegedly agreed to allow police to match his sneakers with those of a footprint found at the home. The prints matched, according to the affidavit.

Maye was arrested and charged with burglary, criminal mischief, violating a condition of release, and criminal trespass. At the time, he was out on bail on a charge of operating a motor vehicle after suspension. Police did not indicate that anything was stolen.

In court on Wednesday, Maye said he would represent himself. Judge Patricia Worth urged him to get a lawyer to help him defend himself against the charges. The burglary charge is a Class B offense that carries a potential sentence of 10 years in prison.

Bail was set at $175 cash.
