MACHIAS, Maine — A proposal is before the Machias Planning Board to convert a vacant building into a Dollar Tree Store.
The building, located at 86 Dublin St., is the former site of the Rite Aid pharmacy, which moved right next door in 2007. The vacated building has been unoccupied since.
Dean Associates Architectural and Interior Design of Wakefield, Massachusetts, filed plans for the Dollar Tree Store on Nov. 6. The item will be on the agenda for the planning board’s Dec. 2 meeting, according to clerks in the town office.
The firm does not plan to make any significant changes to the outside of the building, according to the application.
“The scope of work will be primarily interior in nature, no expansion of the building footprint is proposed,” says the application.
The project is estimated to cost $140,000, according to the application.
“It will be lovely to see something done with this building,” said Sharon Mack, director of the Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. She said that fixing up the building is especially important because of its location on Route 1 as traffic comes into town.
She also was happy to see a new business coming into town.
“New businesses are always good,” she said.
The application does not say when construction would begin if the project is approved.
Efforts Thursday to reach representatives of Dean Associates and Dollar Tree to find out when they planned to open or how many people would be employed were unsuccessful.
