PORTLAND, Maine — A 22-year-old Thomaston mother of two who police say was accidentally shot in the head Monday afternoon by her fiance in the parking lot at Shaw’s Supermarket has died.
An autopsy for Chelsea Jones is scheduled for Friday morning at the Maine medical examiner’s office in Augusta, according to spokesman Mark Belserene.
Jones had been in critical condition since being taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland after the shooting that occurred at 3:40 p.m. Monday as she was sitting in the front passenger seat of a sport utility vehicle at Shaw’s Supermarket in Bath.
Maine Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland had said Tuesday that the handgun was fired by Dylan Grubbs, 23, of Thomaston. Grubbs had driven to Bath with Jones to show the 9 mm Taurus handgun to a prospective buyer. He was holding the gun outside the vehicle when it was fired.
Bath Police Department Lt. Robert Savary said Monday the gun apparently discharged accidentally.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit is handling the investigation into the shooting.
Grubbs was interviewed by police and is cooperating with investigators, according to McCausland. The man who intended to purchase the gun witnessed the shooting and also was interviewed.
The gun was taken to the state police crime lab to be examined.
McCausland said Thursday he had no additional information on the case.
By early afternoon Thursday, a gofundme account established for the young woman had raised $1,325 toward a goal of $5,000.
A notice was put on the site late Wednesday night about Jones’ death.
“Thank you all for the outpouring of love and support. We are so sad to share that today Chelsea succumbed to her injuries. She leaves behind two beautiful children and a large grieving family,” the notice states.
“All funds raised will go towards a memorial service, caring for her children, and the future needs of her children. Thank you so much for thinking of Chelsea and her family during this difficult time. They appreciate all your well wishes, thoughts and prayers,” the notice states.
