BANGOR, Maine — Bail was set Monday at $25,000 cash for a local man charged with making methamphetamine in his Winter Street apartment.

Jeff D. Miller, 48, of Bangor made his first court appearance at the Penobscot Judicial Center.

Miller remained Monday afternoon at the Penobscot County Jail unable to post bail.

He was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated unlawful operation of a methamphetamine laboratory. It is a Class A crime because the lab was in a multi-unit apartment.

Agents with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency were called to 34 Winter St., Apartment 3, in Bangor on Thursday afternoon by Bangor police, who were trying to serve an arrest warrant on Miller, according to an affidavit filed Monday. Bangor police and the MDEA had been investigating suspected production of the drug at the apartment since mid-September.

Information about what the warrant was for was not available late Monday.
MDEA agents on Friday executed a search warrant at Miller’s apartment and found 17 used “one pot” vessels and 13 gas generators along with empty pseudoephedrine blister packs, Coleman fuel, lye, empty lithium batteries, sulfuric acid, tubing and fertilizer, according to the affidavit. All those are items used in producing methamphetamine.

A confidential informant allegedly told Bangor police that Miller was “cooking at least four times a day and is selling at night.” The informant also told police that Miller “rides a bicycle down to Pickering Square where he sells meth to kids” for $200 a gram. He also allegedly gave people money or drugs in exchange for their purchasing pseudoephedrine products at local pharmacies.

Miller’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 12.

If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
