ORONO, Maine — Firefighters responded to a reported gas leak on Washburn Road on Monday morning.
The gas leak was reported shortly after 9 a.m., Orono fire Capt. Joel Sides said. Washburn Road is off Route 2 near the University of Maine campus.
Sides said a construction worker using an excavator accidentally hit a small low-pressure line. Workers were briefly evacuated while the situation was rectified.
The leak occurred near a student housing complex that is under construction. The complex, called The Avenue Orono, is scheduled to open next summer.
Bangor Natural Gas officials assisted at the scene.
