PLEASANT POINT, Maine — Authorities are still searching for a 23-year-old man lost Sunday when his canoe capsized in Cobscook Bay.

Coast Guard Lt. David Borbeau identified the missing person Monday as Majik Francis of Pleasant Point.

The search continued Monday with a helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod and a boat manned by Coast Guard personnel from Eastport, according to Borbeau.

Asked if he thought emergency crews would find Francis alive, Borbeau said, “We’re always optimistic.”

Francis was one of three people in the canoe when it capsized around noon Sunday in Half Moon Cove.

Borbeau did not have the names of the other two people, both of whom made it to shore. He said, however, that they did not suffer any injuries. They were seen by EMS personnel and released.

Borbeau said the canoe had been located near Spectacle Island in Cobscook Bay. He did not say when it was found.

Jeff Nichols, spokesman for the Maine Department of Marine Resources, said one lifejacket was found in the canoe.

The water temperatures are in the upper 40s to around 50, said Victor Nouhan, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in Caribou.

The weather was sunny with temperatures in the low 50s when the accident took place, Nouhan said Monday.

Rain moved in during the late afternoon and continued overnight. Temperatures dropped to freezing and the shore got a dusting to 1 inch of snow, he said.

Borbeau did not know what the canoeists were doing. “That was never reported to us,” he said.

Maine Marine Patrol and members of several local police and fire departments also were assisting with the search, Borbeau said.
