PLEASANT POINT, Maine — The body of a 23-year-old man missing since Sunday when his canoe capsized has been recovered, the Maine Marine Patrol confirmed Wednesday night.
Majik Francis of Pleasant Point was one of three people in the canoe when it capsized about noon Sunday in Half Moon Cove, near Eastport.
The other two people — Brittany Foss, 38, of Eastport and Joseph Francis Stevens, 23, of Pleasant Point — swam safely to shore. None of the three were wearing life jackets.
The U.S. Coast Guard announced Monday afternoon that it had suspended its search for Francis after 24 hours and covering 193 square miles. The Marine Patrol and locals continued to look for him by land, air and water.
Marine patrol spokesman Jeff Nichols said the body was recovered by volunteer divers from the Passamaquoddy Tribe around 5 p.m. Wednesday, just off the western tip of Carlow Island.
