Husson’s Frost to play in senior all-star game
BANGOR — Husson University men’s soccer senior Phil Frost has been selected to compete in the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League Senior All-Star Game on Sunday at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Frost is the first Husson player to be selected to participate in the event in program history and one of 46 seniors on the 2015 squad.
Frost took home first-team honors for the fourth time in his career in 2015 and led the team and ranked third in the conference with 12 goals. His 26 points were good for seventh in the league.
He finished his career with 55 goals, 18 assists for 128 points, 13 game-winning goals on 279 shots in 79 games played. He is the program’s all-time NCAA career leader in points, goals, game-winning goals and shots.
Patriots’ Brady continues to lead Pro Bowl voting by fans
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, with 342,471 votes, continues to lead all players in balloting for the 2016 Pro Bowl.
NFL.com announced Wednesday that Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (298,754 votes) ranks second overall, while Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton (277,104 votes), Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (254,253 votes) and Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman (244,448 votes) round out the top five.
Fan voting for the 2016 Pro Bowl will continue online and on web-enabled mobile phones at www.NFL.com/probowl/ballot until Tuesday, Dec. 15. The Pro Bowl players will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 22 on NFL Network.
The Pro Bowl players are determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counts one-third toward determining the 88 All-Star players who will be eligible for the Pro Bowl Draft. Players will later be assigned to teams through the Pro Bowl Draft on Jan. 27.
White Sox sign catcher Avila to one-year deal
Veteran catcher Alex Avila signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Chicago White Sox.
Avila played just 67 games with Detroit in 2015, batting .191 (34-178) with four home runs and 13 RBIs. He was on the disabled list from May 8-July 2 with a bone bruise in his left knee.
Avila, 29, is a career .242 hitter with 66 home runs, 282 RBIs, 246 runs scored and a .345 on-base percentage over seven MLB seasons, all with the Tigers.
“Alex gives us a veteran presence behind the plate who provides solid defense and a productive left-handed bat,” White Sox GM Rick Hahn said. “He is a well-respected leader in the clubhouse who we believe will make us stronger.”
Chargers’ guard back in concussion protocol
San Diego Chargers offensive guard D.J. Fluker is back in concussion protocol for the second time in a week, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Just hours after an independent neurologist cleared his return from a concussion that he suffered four days earlier, the right guard suffered a concussion during Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Fluker also suffered a concussion during practice last Wednesday.
Fluker, 24, reported concussion-like symptoms, including headaches, following the 33-3 loss at Qualcomm Stadium. A former first-round pick from Alabama in 2013, Fluker’s status is considered in doubt for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Broncos sign QB Ponder
The Denver Broncos signed quarterback Christian Ponder and placed defensive end Kenny Anunike on injured reserve because of a knee injury, it was announced on Wednesday.
Ponder (6-2, 230 pounds) is a fifth-year player who started 36-of-38 games during his first four NFL seasons with Minnesota after being selected by the Vikings in the first round (12th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Florida State.
In March, he signed with the Oakland Raiders, but was released on Sept. 5.
Ponder has completed 632-of-1,057 passes (59.5 percent) for 6,658 yards with 38 touchdowns and 36 interceptions during his career. He has a 75.9 quarterback rating. He also has rushed for 639 yards and seven touchdowns.
