BANGOR, Maine — A 19-year-old Charleston man was charged Wednesday morning with burglary, theft and criminal mischief in connection with a break-in at Charleston Pentecostal Church.
Todd Francis made his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon at the Penobscot Judicial Center. He was not asked to enter pleas because he has not yet been indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury.
Bail was set at $2,000 cash.
Maine State Police Trooper Brian Bean was called to the church about 8:19 a.m. Wednesday by the children’s pastor, according to the affidavit the trooper filed.
Bean said that when he watched surveillance footage that showed two men entering the building about 2:30 a.m., he recognized Francis. The trooper had arrested him the day before on a domestic violence charge and recognized his jacket.
The trooper also recognized the male juvenile who allegedly was with Francis at the church.
Information about whether the juvenile has been charged with a crime was not available Wednesday.
Missing from the church was an estimated $40 in change and three Xbox game consoles, the affidavit said. Exterior and interior office doors also were damaged.
If convicted, Francis faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 on the burglary charge alone.
