BANGOR, Maine — A Mexico man suffered serious injuries Monday night when his car collided with a loaded pulp truck on Route 2, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

The crash happened shortly after Gerald Pelletier, 50, ran over a dead deer in the roadway, which caused him to lose control of his car. Pelletier’s car traveled into the path of a pulp truck driven by Bernard Roy, 31, of Passumpsic, Vermont, McCausland said Tuesday in a news release.

McCausland said the deer had been struck and killed by another vehicle moments before that.

Pelletier is being treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Information about his medical condition was not immediately available late Tuesday afternoon.

Roy had minor injuries and did not require hospitalization, McCausland said.

Route 2 at the crash site was closed for most of the night because the six-axle pulp truck overturned in the road, spilling part of its load of logs.
