LEWISTON, Maine — A man escaped serious injury Friday morning when he apparently dozed off at the wheel and flipped his sedan on a busy Route 196, known locally as Lisbon Street, according to Lewiston police.

The man, whose name Sgt. Michael Whalen did not disclose, was traveling east when the crash occurred around 9:37 a.m. at the South Avenue intersection.

Whalen said the driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, dozed off, struck a curb and a telephone pole before the car wound up on its roof.

The sergeant said the driver was fortunate to escape with only cuts on his hand and elbow and that no other vehicles were hit. Paramedics checked out the man at the scene, and he was released.

The Saturn the man was driving was totaled.
