PORTLAND, Maine — A suspicious device in a Middle Street building forced the closure of that street Monday morning, according to Portland police.

The device was located in an office building lobby at 100 Middle Street shortly before 9 a.m., Assistant Chief Vernon Malloch said.

The building was evacuated as Portland police’s Hazardous Devices unit inspected the package, with assistance from an explosives-trained police dog.

Malloch said the package was deemed safe around 11 a.m. and building occupants were allowed to return. Middle Street was closed between Franklin and Pearl streets until about 11.
