WATERVILLE, Maine — Waterville police say an armed man who created an hours-long standoff in the police department parking lot is now in custody.

Police say Gary Cross, 58, of Troy was threatening suicide. He arrived at the police station around 6 p.m. Monday and sat in a pickup truck outside for several hours. The situation ended overnight, and Cross is now in police custody.

Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey says the public was never in danger. No charges have been filed yet, but Massey says Cross could face a charge for creating a standoff.

Several streets around the police department were shut down during this incident, but they are now back open, and Massey says no one was hurt.
