Millennials — that elusive target demographic beloved of desperate advertisers and debated by basically everyone else — are arguably the most written about generation. There are tons of articles arguing about this group of people.

For those hungry for more insight, here’s this: Millennials are also pretty poor, statistically speaking.

Especially in Maine.

According to a Business Insider analysis of data from the Minnesota Population Center’s 2014 “American Community Survey,” Mainers born between 1981 and 1997 earn a median income of only $19,200, which ties with New Mexico for the fourth lowest in the nation. According to that data, the median income for all workers in Maine last year was $33,400.

The highest median was in Alaska, with $27,500, and the lowest with Montana, which was $18,000.

Business Insider points out that since some of these millennials could be college students working part-time, which would drive the median income down.
