ELLSWORTH — A Franklin man who ran out of gas along Bucksport Road on Friday night was hit by a car when he tried to cross the darkened street, according to Ellsworth police Sgt. Shawn Willey.
Linwood Tracy, 58, suffered head and upper chest trauma from the collision and was taken initially to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, but was later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, the sergeant said. No information about his condition was available on Saturday night, a nursing supervisor said.
Leslee Moulton, 59, of Trenton was traveling toward Ellsworth on Bucksport Road about 5:25 p.m. when the collision occurred around mailbox No. 461, Willey said.
“Mr. Tracy had run out of gas and he was parked along the side of the road,” the sergeant said.
As Moulton approached, Tracy walked out in front of her vehicle.
“She had started braking when she saw him,” Willey said, remarking that the stretch of Bucksport Road where the collision occurred is a 55-mph zone.
Moulton was not injured and her vehicle’s air bags did not deploy, the sergeant said.
The wet, dark roadway may be a factor in the crash, Willey said, adding that there is no reason to believe that alcohol or speed were involved.
“There is no lighting where this happened,” the sergeant said. “It was dark out and the road was wet so it was hard to see. It was a dark night.”
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office did the accident reconstruction.
