SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine —The Coast Guard received a medical call at 3 a.m. Saturday from the fishing boat Danny Boy, stating the captain was having chest pains and needed help.
They launched their MH-60 Jayhawk to the area 40 nautical miles southeast of Portland. Once on scene, it was too dangerous to use their hoist off Danny Boy’s deck. The Zumwalt was in the area and offered assistance. They launched a boat crew and transferred the captain to their destroyer. The Coast Guard then successfully hoisted the man aboard and got him to Maine Medical Center for care.
“Our main concern with this type of medical emergency is to recover the patient safely and transport them to a higher level care as quickly as possible,” Lt. David Bourbeau, public affairs officer at Sector Northern New England, said. “Fortunately the Zumwalt was operating in the area and was able to provide valuable assistance to facilitate a safe hoist evolution for the rescue crew.”
