CARIBOU, Maine — Accumulating snow continued to fall in northern sections of the state Tuesday morning, with up to a foot possible, according to the National Weather Service.
A winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. for the St. John Valley and central Aroostook County, according to the weather service’s Caribou office, with between 8 and 12 inches expected in northern Aroostook County. Southern portions of the county were expected to receive between 3 and 8 inches.
Blowing snow and icing conditions will create hazardous driving conditions and may result in downed trees and power lines in the area, the National Weather Service reported.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of Somerset, Piscataquis and Penobscot counties through 7 p.m. with some snow, sleet or freezing rain expected to cause slippery roads and limited visibility at times.
Greater Bangor can expect a mixture of rain and wet snow throughout the day.
State police in Augusta reported three vehicles have slid off Interstate 95 between Newport and Pittsfield, but no serious injuries were reported. The University of Maine’s police department also reported several crashes in the Old Town and Orono areas.
