ELLSWORTH, Maine — Two dozen people have submitted applications to become the next chief of the Ellsworth Police Department, according to the city manager.
David Cole said 24 people have applied for the post, but he declined to go into details about what stage of interviews the city is in. He did say he hopes to have picked a new chief by the end of December.
“That’s not guaranteed,” Cole said Friday.
The City Council, he said, will vote on whether to support Cole’s choice for the position.
The city began the process of looking for a new police chief in September, after Chief Christopher Coleman announced he planned to resign. Coleman, a 25-year veteran of Maine State Police, has held the position since Oct. 1, 2014, following the retirement of his predecessor, John DeLeo.
When he announced his plans to resign, Coleman said he decided he wants to find a job outside of law enforcement.
Cole said Friday that Coleman has indicated he will stay on as chief through January 2016, when the next chief should be able to step into the post.
